Three Great Summer Wines

0

With August upon us, the heat of summer is in full swing. Legal Ink Magazine dropped by ENO at Hotel del Coronado to soak in the sun and enjoy the summer breeze. Ashley Luna, ENO’s Sommelier was gracious enough to guide us through his top three favorites wines and food pairings for the summer.

Sergio Mottura Grechetto Umbria Italy

As the name of the grape implies, the Italians have been growing this varietal so long that they reason it must be ‘from the Greeks.’ This wine is medium bodied with pineapple, kiwi, smoke and crushed herbs on the nose. It creates a crisp, mineral-driven palate with a lingering finish and good concentration. This wine pairs perfectly with cheese and charcuterie, or grilled fish and poultry.

Chateau D’eclans rosé

Chateau D’eclans Whispering Angel rosé is from Provence. While most rosé production is often viewed as a way to use excess grapes, Chateau D’eclans treat their wines with the same seriousness and care as top-flight Bordeaux. This wine is elegant, expressing sweet red fruits and leads to a dry, peppery finish. These wines are the perfect accompaniment to heirloom tomatoes.

Melville’s Estate

Pinot Noir is great all year round, but is the perfect red for summer. Melville’s Estate wine from Santa Barbara County is light, floral, and fresh with delicate tannins. Fruity Pinot works great with marinated meats and kebabs, and sweet items like peppers and onions. I recommend chilling reds for 10-15 minutes in the refrigerator, or pulling them straight from the cellar for a more refreshing drink on a warm summer day.

More About Ashley and ENO

ENO

Ashley Luna, ENO’s Sommelier, comes to The Del with more than 15 years experience in the hospitality industry. Luna’s Western Sonoma County upbringing fostered a strong love of food and wine, and was where his farm-to-table concept was first influenced. Prior to ENO, Luna held positions in wine and management at Waterbar and Delfina in San Francisco, and was Sommelier at Aqua where he helped the restaurant earn two Michelin Stars.

ENO at Hotel del Coronado is a wood-fired artisan pizza and wine bar offering 75 different wines, and 25 wines by the glass. Wine enthusiasts can choose from a boutique selection of California and international wine producers, including a few gems that can only be found at ENO. With unique community-style tables and firepits, the restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating for up to 100 guests.
