Make Taking Action Your
Goal for Your Rainmaking Plan


It’s that time of year again.

The time when all of the legal marketing coaches and consultants come out of the woodwork and talk about creating your “Rainmaking Plan” for next year; they will write about the importance of creating the plan, they will blog about how to plan, and they will discuss how to create S.M.A.R.T. goals.

I know – I’ve done it myself. I’ve written about planning and goal setting many times on my blog. This is because I truly believe what Benjamin Franklin once wrote:

“Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.”

Want to get a little closer to the 21st century with your quotes? How about this one from one of my personal development mentors, Jim Rohn:

If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.

Planning is incredibly important to determining where you want to take your career. And while many attorneys will read this, and the other ubiquitous planning blogs, very few will commit the time necessary to plan what it is they want to achieve for next year. It is a very valuable exercise to take the time to write down the goals you would like to achieve for your practice.

However, there are two things that are just as important, if not more essential, than creating your Rainmaking Plan if you would like to be a successful Rainmaker:

The first is to determine why you want to achieve that goal. Coming up with the reasons that you want to become a Rainmaker will move your further along to achieving that goal, particularly when it seems like it isn’t working in the short term.   You must determine every reason that you would like to achieve the goal of becoming a Rainmaker and it could be as simple as wanting to earn more money. Then you must determine why you want to earn more money – to create a college fund for your children, to buy something that you want, to get out of debt – these reasons will motivate you to do the things necessary to achieve your goals. When the “whys” are important enough, then you will have the motivation necessary for you to continue pursuing the goals you have written.

The other important thing that you must do is to take action. Understand that while writing down your Rainmaking Plan by figuring out what you would like to achieve (your goals) and why you want to achieve them (your motivation), without committing to taking deliberate, conscious, and consistent action every single day towards your goals, all of the planning you do is just a waste of time.

One of my favorite quotes, which is printed and posted on my bulletin board right in front of my computer (and therefor, visible to me every single day) is by W. Clement Stone:

“No matter how carefully you plan your goals, they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto.”

Make 2015 the year you go after those dreams by taking the action necessary to achieve your goals.
